Period

	The Period option is a general filter for finding works of a certain style. We put composers in the period which matches their date of birth. However there are a few exceptions - for example, although Debussy was born during the Late Romantic period, his music was so revolutionary we “promoted” him to Beyond Romantic! If you don’t find what you’re looking for it may help to just leave this option on “All periods”. For information on searching by date, click the button for Keywords

Nationality

	Nationality refers to where a composer was born (without regard to whether they later became citizens of another country)

Type of work

	If you open this drop-down without specifying a composer you’ll see a complete list of every type of work to choose from. However if you first select a composer, it conveniently shows only the kinds of work the composer actually wrote. Note that anything that doesn’t fit one of the set categories is listed under Other Works. Please remember that a work can only belong to one type! A search on “Student pieces” only finds works specifically written for learners (eg. Schumann Album for the Young). It won’t find works which have a type of their own - Sonatinas, Suites, Studies, miniature masterpieces like Beethoven’s Für Elise (listed under Other Works) - which may also be very suitable for student study.

Keywords

	You can enter as many keywords as you like, including words from other languages. Results are shown for pieces which have ALL of your keywords in their data. This means the more keywords you use the more you restrict your search so if you don’t find what you want, it may help to use fewer keywords. (See also notes for searching by Exact Title). You can also enter a date for a keyword search: for composers born in a given year, enter date with a trailing hyphen, eg. 1770- for composers who died in a given year, enter date with a leading hyphen, eg. -1770 for composers born in a certain period, enter dates separated by a hyphen eg. 1770-1827 Note - a date with no hyphen lists all composers with that year anywhere in their data.

Exact title

	Unlike a keyword search which looks for matches anywhere in the database, this search only looks at titles (and also first lines of songs). You don’t have to enter the whole title - for example typing just “Elise” without even choosing a composer will quickly find Beethoven’s Für Elise. (Ordinary letters can be used in place of letters with accents). Some titles and texts have been translated into English - use the Keywords option to search for words in the composer’s original language.
