How to use this website

  • Navigating the site
Use Qnotesmusic buttons and links to navigate the website. Avoid using Internet Explorer (or other browser) “Back” and “Forward buttons” - these give unpredictable results depending on how your computer/browser is set up.
  • Surprising search results
Occasionally searches may offer surprising results (eg. 64 Beethoven Sonatas!) These are always worth exploring. In the case of Beethoven, you can choose from two complete editions of 32 sonatas, edited by either Claudio Arrau or Martienssen/Weismann.
  • How search results are sorted
Search results are arranged alphabetically, except works which are part of a cycle (eg. Schumann Carnaval) where the correct order for performance is preserved. If several works all have the same title (eg. Beethoven Sonata) they are further sorted by Opus number.
  • Alternative spellings for composer names
Although you can search for a composer by entering his name as a Keyword, it’s generally better to use the drop-down list. This avoids possible problems when there is more than one way to spell his name - eg. Rachmaninoff or Rachmaninov. (Locate a name at the bottom of the list quickly by keying in the first letter).
  • Transcriptions
You’ll find transcriptions under either the original composer or the transcriber (eg. Schubert-Liszt is also listed as Liszt-Schubert).
  • Keyword searches
A keyword search searches for works that have all of the words you entered, in their data. If all of the words you entered are not present you will get zero results.
  • Missing works
Sometimes specifying too many options on the home page will hide a work from the search results. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, try specifying less options. Or you can email us your request.
